Vlan-tagging in Workstation/Player

Anyone know if it's possible to get the virtual networking environment within VMware workstation or player to handle vlan tags, and if so, how? I know this can be done in esx/esxi with virtual guest tagging (VGT). Thanks.

  • Option 1, dynamips can emulate a cisco device to handle vlan tags.

Go to these links for more information:

    graphical network simulator - http://www.gns3.net/

    dynamips - http://www.ipflow.utc.fr/index.php/Cisco_7200_Simulator

    dynagen - http://www.dynagen.org/

Important notice: you have to provide your own Cisco IOS to use with GNS3.

Option 2, explore Vyatta Click here

  • These assume vmware workstation will pass the vlan tags from the guest, do you know this to be the case? BTW, big fan of gns3, recommend it all the time.
  • vmware workstation will just pass the vlan tags from the guest. I dont think vmware workstation/player support vlan tags but I believe there are more VM images or tools out there that can handle vlan tags within vmware workstation/player.

    CMIIW ...
  • that's good to know. I had trouble finding any documentation on that.
  • Just to confirm that this works great in VMware workstation. It'll be in a tech tip later this week, but here's what I have configured on LTM VE and on a Vyatta Open Networking virtual appliance. I should note that the LTM VE configuration is performed in tmsh, and the Vyatta configuration is done logged into the appliance as vyatta/vyatta.

Would i be right in saying VMWare would just pass as a dumb pipe. So if i have PFSense on the other side configured for dot1q, then that would work fine too?
