Downtime when adding more servers to a live pool?

Hi,

1) Will there be any downtime if I create nodes in disabled/forced offline state and then add them to an active pool AS IS? 2) When the time comes that I need to enable these nodes , will it cause any kind of temporary downtime/glitch to the pool or existing members?

Thanks in advance!

  • The answer to both of your questions is no. This is a good controlled approach for introducing new resources.

Once you add the new node into your pool and activate it, then it'll begin processing connections according to your load balancing algorithm.

Since the traffic will start flowing towards the new pool member, need to ensure the new member is healthy (with proper health monitor) and the your persistence configured is as per the requirement. Otherwise adding a new member is event free.

A follow up question: If we have an existing live pool and that has no priority group setting configured for its members. If we want to change the priority group, what should be the best approach as to not incur any downtime/glitch?

I'd first determine which of your pool members you want to put into the highest priority group and change those server values during an off-peak hour. Then adjust the priority of the second or lower tier members accordingly. No traffic will be lost however you end up doing it, but doing it during off peak hours will ensure one of your hosts doesn't get overloaded unexpectedly.
