bigiq deployment
Hello,
we have purchased the BigIq as a successor of our EM. The documentation is not very clear to me for the use of self ip's.
Do I need them at all? Can't I just use the mgmt. int for all tasks? And if I will deploy an inside vlan and the corresponding self ip's how can I make sure this one is used for the communication with the bigip's and not the mgmt int?
Thank you
Alfred
You can use the management IP for all communications to/from BIG-IQ and BIG-IP. It is our suggested configuration for more recent versions of BIG-IQ. If you use a self-ip, some communication (for example: update of the REST framework) will still try to use the management IP.

- quickref_74249NimbostratusThank you very much for your quick response. Now I can request my vm image and start setting the BigIq up.

Kyle, is this still the case with 5.3? The documentation gets a little confusing, especially if you are new to BIG-IQ. I'm reading that you need an external network, an internal network, and a management network. Planning and Implementing a Centralized Management Deployment

With the addition of the Data Collection Devices into the picture for BIG-IQ, multiple networks are suggested. You can definitely get away with two networks, or even one for smaller deployments.

You can use the mgmt interface for all management tasks. You don't need a self-IP. If you do have a self self-ip and you do not want to have any communication with your BIG-IP on mgmt, make sure you discover the BIG-IP with a destination address that will route out the internal VLAN interface. Routing will decide what interface the traffic egresses on the BIG-IQ to the BIG-IP.
