You can use the management IP for all communications to/from BIG-IQ and BIG-IP. It is our suggested configuration for more recent versions of BIG-IQ. If you use a self-ip, some communication (for example: update of the REST framework) will still try to use the management IP.

prt1969_120570Kyle, is this still the case with 5.3? The documentation gets a little confusing, especially if you are new to BIG-IQ. I'm reading that you need an external network, an internal network, and a management network. Planning and Implementing a Centralized Management Deployment
With the addition of the Data Collection Devices into the picture for BIG-IQ, multiple networks are suggested. You can definitely get away with two networks, or even one for smaller deployments.
