Hello,   we have purchased the BigIq as a successor of our EM. The documentation is not very clear to me for the use of self ip's.   Do I need them at all? Can't I just use the mgmt. int for al...

    You can use the management IP for all communications to/from BIG-IQ and BIG-IP. It is our suggested configuration for more recent versions of BIG-IQ. If you use a self-ip, some communication (for example: update of the REST framework) will still try to use the management IP.

You can use the mgmt interface for all management tasks. You don't need a self-IP. If you do have a self self-ip and you do not want to have any communication with your BIG-IP on mgmt, make sure you discover the BIG-IP with a destination address that will route out the internal VLAN interface. Routing will decide what interface the traffic egresses on the BIG-IQ to the BIG-IP.
