Why can I configure DNS Caches without a proper license ?
Hello DevCentral,
I have an F5 on v.11.6.0 that has no license for either GTM or 'DNS Services'.
From the Admin Web GUI there is no way I can create a DNS cache but It works no problem by executing 'tmsh create ltm dns cache transparent test_cache' on a shell.
If i go back to the GUI and create a DNS profile from Local Traffic -> Services -> DNS, I can now select 'test_cache' from the 'DNS Cache Name' option.
I've tried this on a number of different F5 devices under v11.5.x and got the same exact results.
Is this a bug ? Will the cache work like the F5 was licensed for it or is there some limitation ?
Thanks !
Generally, TMSH will accept configuration of unlicensed features so that the system does not prevent an otherwise valid configuration from loading at system start. Note that while the configuration will load in such cases, BIG-IP will operate in an appropriately degraded manner until a license containing the desired feature is activated.
