move config to another Big IP LTM
Hi all,
I would like to know what the best approach is to move the complete config from one Big Ip box to another. Is it ok just to create a .ucs file on one box and import it to the other ?
The 2 boxes will have the same code:
Sys::Version Main Package Product BIG-IP Version 10.2.1 Build 511.0 Edition Hotfix HF3 Date Sat Apr 16 22:58:45 PDT 2011
Thanks for any advice !! Happy new year.
Frederik.

Hi Frederik,
Happy new year to you too.
You can create and import ucs, it will work.
Are this 2 boxes same hardware version ?
If it's not, you will have some issues with interfaces so you'll have to edit the .conf manually.- nathe

Also, is the hostname of the two boxes the same? if it is then in v10.x it will do a full config restore (which i assume you want to do), if not then only a shared config restore.

Hello Thomas,
Thanks for your answer. The 2 boxes have the same hardware:
Platform Name BIG-IP 8950 BIOS Revision OBJ-0339-00 - Build: 90100
I see however that the source box has 2 extra 10 GB interfaces and the destination box has not. The 2 interfaces are in diabled status, so seems to be ok.
The hostname of the source box is not the same as the destination box. I could change that just before I do the move. Would that make the move easier ? What about licenses ? I assume they still will work on the destination box.
Kind regards, Frederik

If you want an exact copy of the config I'd rename the other BIG-IP (which is going to get a UCS file restored onto it) to be the same as the original. That way a ucs restore will include everything. You could always rename the host afterwards.

Which version is installed on your appliances ?
About your licenses, they won't work on the destination box because a license is binded to a hardware platform.
You will add -no-license option to avoid a problem on it.- nathe

It's v10.2.1 (mentioned above). Not sure the no-license option is available with 10.x. Think the v10.x syntax uses the rma option: load /sys ucs rma - Thomas_Gobet_91

Thanks nathan, I'm going to buy me new eyes as I don't see anything even when it's written ;) You're right, v10.x doesn't have no-license option, you have to use "rma".

Thanks for the input.
We the destination box is currently in production and has licenses installed on it, so these will remain active and we could use these then I suppose...
