How to move a BIG-IP VE license

A quick note to help folks find out how to move a license from one BIG-IP VE system to another.

The process is relatively straightforward, starting with revoking existing licenses via either the Configuration Utility or TMSH.

BUT, there are a few things to consider. Keep in mind...

  • This functionality is available only for BIG-IP VE systems.
  • Revoking the license disables traffic management features and
returns the BIG-IP system to an unlicensed state.
  • Add-on keys are tied to the base registration key.
Once used/activated the Add-ons cannot be revoked individually.
  • If you don't have access to the BIG-IP VE (for instance, if you deleted the virtual machine), you'll need to contact F5 Support and request an "Allow Move" on the registration key to move it to a new VM.
  • The BIG-IP system needs to resolve the hostname activate.f5.com and have outbound access on TCP port 443.
