How do I configure an F5 LTM VE Lab on my Laptop and drive traffic to it to generate logs?
I have successfully installed the F5 LTM VE Lab on VMWare Fusion 6, but I'm unclear how to configure it so that I can drive traffic through it from my browser (I am open to driving traffic in other ways, such as using blitz.io) with a macro.
I'm unclear on the details of setting up the underlying network to do so.
I have the configuration worksheet, but I'm not clear how to define the IPs and VLAN groups to achieve this objective:

Hi
This could be a very long thread. :)
Let's see how far you've gotten. Are you able to reach the management over https or ssh? Have you setup any web servers that you can use to serve the traffic?

From your latest post it seems like you don't have a local interface configured on the same network as your management interface.
Could you please post the output of the following command on your Macs terminal:
ifconfig -a
Also post the output from the same command on your LTM and if possible, upload a picture of the network topology/VM settings.

I had been able to reach yesterday the management portal from the web...but I cannot now and am unsure what I changed. I get a time-out when pinging.

I got the management portal working...not sure what I changed, I rebooted it once and it didn't work and it appears to be working now after a second reboot (and I removed one of the virutal NIC cards from 4 down to 3...

I am trying to configure selfips and vlan's and not sure what to use. So far:
VLANS: external 4093 1.2 Common internal 4094 1.3 Common

My self-ips:
I created two internals because I couldn't delete one of them:

The key thing here is VMware Fusion networking is neither intuitive or helpful. You need to look at the networking file in /Library/Preferences/VMWare Fusion directory. This contains the networks and there subnet settings. If you need to add more then replicate what is there and add your own. Make sure Fusion is not running when you edit this file
- Kevin_Davies_40NacreousYour laptop is .1 and the F5 will be what ever you set it. I usually use .10. If you want outgoing access set the NAT option as yes and the gateway address for your F5 will be .2 in that network. Note you can only have one NAT enabled interface.

Hi!
I am trying to configure selfips and vlan's and not sure what to use. So far: VLANS: external 4093 1.2 Common internal 4094 1.3 Common
This should be fine.
You only have two vmnet interfaces according to your ifconfig (maybe you missed some in the screen shot?):
VMNET1 192.168.77.1 VMNET8 192.168.96.1
And your LTM has two self ips (I assume you don't want the 10.0.0.100):
192.168.239.2 192.168.41.2
What you want to do is to make sure that your mac has an interface on the same network as the external and the internal vlan (which means that you need to change the ip of your interfaces on your Mac, or your LTM. You will also need to place the LTMs interfaces on the correct networks.
Example config:
Mac config VMNET1 192.168.239.1 Gives the MAC an interface and ip on the external VLAN VMNET8 192.168.41.1 Gives the MAC an interface and ip on the internal VLAN LTM Config: 192.168.239.2 Configure the external VLAN interface in vmware to belong to VMNET1 192.168.41.2 Configure the internal VLAN interface in vmware to belong to VMNET8
If you are unable to determine which interface is which on the machine and in VMware you can compare the Mac addresses in the LTM and in the VMWare interfaces in Fusion.
- LTM Mac addresses are available under Network -> Interfaces
- Fusion Mac addresses should be available under Virtual Machine -> Network Adapter -> Network adapter settings (go through each of them and note tha mac address).
Hope that makes sense.

Thank you! Let me work on it -- I should have three VMNET, I can pull those out directly and past them after I recreate the LTM self IP's (for some reason, I cannot delete the first self IP I created the 10.x.x.x)....
BTW, I would love to find a way to stay connected if there is something I can do to add value (obviously not specifically in regards to setting up F5, but I am working on something that is designed to help with F5 administration and tuning)
