Traffic Group Failover when Trunk Fails

Hello,

I have a pair of F5 LTMs running as Active-Standby in a traffic group. Both the LTMs have trunks configured from a switch.

What will happen when all the interface in the trunk fails in the active F5? Will it automatically failover to the secondary device OR do I have to setup a HA group and track the trunk interface in the HA group and then attach the HA group to the Traffic group?

  • Hi

You should setup HA-GROUP if you track trunk interface.

HA-GROUP setup should be on each of your device(Active and Standby)

    HA-GROUP configuration isn`t syncable feature.

    please refer to it.

      Thanks swjo!

I have one more follow up query. If configure both LTMs with HA groups, how often they compare the weight of their HA group to find who got the better metric and if it needs traffic failover?

I can`t answer your question very accurately.

but BIGIP system with HA pair, always check peer device`s Active-Standby status.

When one`s peer goes Active to standby, immediately goes Active.

For my experience, failover configuration via HA-GROUP have no delay.

If you see /var/log/ltm and when interface down, immediately calculate HA Score

      and failover event occurs.

  • Hi,

Without HA GROUP, the only solution to check if interface is enabled is vlan fail safe or gateway fail safe!

Both fail safe features make traffic group to become standby if one interface fails, even if the other appliance can’t become active.

HA GROUP allow to manage priority to always have one member up!

So in some deployment, I configured trunk with only one interface to enable HA GROUP.
