How do I rename self-IP objects?

Can someone explain how I can rename a few self-IP objects? I see these are located in bigip_base.conf. I just want to change the object names to reference the new device name which has changed.

example: f5abc01-self-ip-100 -> f5xyz01-self-ip-100

  • Depending on how many objects you have in your config, and any dependencies on this self-IP, your best bet would probably be to:

    1. Create a new temporary self-IP in the same subnet
    2. Delete the old self-IP
    3. Recreate the old self-IP with the new name
    4. Delete the temporary self-IP
  • When I create a new self-IP and try to delete the old one I get this error:

    01071413:3: Cannot delete IP (10.1.30.12) because it is used by a system unicast address.

  • So there are some dependencies you'll need to deal with. Do you this address configured for peering between HA units?

  • That was it. I have two devices in an HA pair and had to add new IP/remove the old IP from the failover unicast configuration first, then I was able to remove the self-IP from the device.
