Mar 10, 2010Failed Management pack install (ver. 1.6.1 and 1.7)
In both versions, the setup fails with the same error:
<03-10-2010 11:53:32> Warning: Installer Stage[ServiceStateChange]: action=Custom Install Action: Install, duration=78.3ms, state=Failure[Could not load type '' from assembly 'F5Networks.ManagementPack.SetupHelper, Version=1.7.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=c5d6f0a20911b86b'.]
The RMS is clustered, with the setup run on the active node. SCOM version is 2007 SP1 with latest update roll-up (Version 6.0.6278.0).
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Gal.

- Dave_Ruddell_79Historic F5 AccountHi Gal,
Can you please run the provided powershell script and send us back the results (either here or ManagementPack(at)f5.com? The easiest way to do this is just download to the desktop, unzip, then start up a powershell prompt and drag and drop the file from the desktop in there.
Once the script finishes running it should be located in your Operations Manager folder (Typically C:\Program Files\System Center Operations Manager 2007\) and it will be named SystemInformation.F5.log.
Thanks and Good Luck,

Hi Dave,
Sorry for the delay in the answer...
Here's the SysInfo output from the script:
Thanks for your help on this.
G. - Dave_Ruddell_79Historic F5 AccountHey Gal,
So I think we have an idea of what might be wrong. After looking at the files in your GAC, we believe you are missing the CustomMarshalers.dll. My recommendation is to see if you can find this file on your system. Your .NET 2.0 is up-to-date, so the file should be there, but for some reason it didn't make it into the GAC.
On my system I found it in the C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727 folder, but it also might be in Program Files, etc. I would just open a command prompt and do a "dir /s CustomMarshalers.dll" in the C:\ base directory and see if it shows up. If you find it, you can jump to that directory and run "gacutil /I CustomMarshalers.dll". Once that dll is installed into the GAC, setup should run without a hitch.
Oh, and gacutil is typically not in your Path environment variable to begin with, but I seemed to see it in the same locations as the CustomMarshalers.dll file.
Good luck,

Hi Dave,
Thanks. I checked the GAC and found 2 things:
First, I only have the GACUTIL file in the .Net V.1.1.4322, and that version apparently doesn't work well for registering .Net 2.0 files
(I've tried installing the CustomMarshalers.dll into the GAC again but received a "Fail: Unknown error". Apparently Ineed to download the GACUTIL for 2.0 which comes with the SDK...
Second, in the GAC itself, I found the following entry:
-----
The cache of ngen files contains the following entries:
CustomMarshalers, Version=1.0.5000.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a, Custom=5a00410050002d004e0035002e0032002d00380046002d00350034003700460034004200370033000000
-----
Which, apparently, doesn't help.
Guess I'll download the SDK and take the gacutil off of it, then try to reinstall the file into the GAC with it.
I'll let you know how it goes.
G.
** Update: Copied the GACUTIL from the SDK on my workstation to the SCOM server and registered the CustomMarshalers.dll into the GAC.
F5 MP setup failed again. similar issue it seems although the error message was a bit different. attaching new setup log file.
Do I need to actually install the SDK on the server?
I'm pretty hesitant about installing it on a production server...
Thanks again.
Gal - Julian_Balog_34Historic F5 AccountHi Gal,
I don't think you need to install the whole SDK to have your problem resolved. Apparently the CustomMarshalers.dll GAC-ed on your system doesn't have the expected version (v2.0.50727.3053), which is part of the .NET 2.0 framework. In the GAC you still have v1.0.5000.0 of the CustomMarshalers.dll. I would recommend the following steps to get you unblocked:
1. First, check if the .NET 2.0 CustomMarshalers.dll assembly is installed on your system. Look for it in C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727. If the file is there, check the version: right click > properties > Version tab > File version: it should be 2.0.50727.3053. It the file is not there, copy the files in the archive attached to this post (32-bit version of the CustomMarshalers.dll and related XML serializer file), into the C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727 folder. (But I'd be worried if you don't have this file on your system, as it should be part of a default, non-tampered-with .NET 2 framework installation).
2. Install v2.0.50727.3053 of the CustomMarshallers.dll in the GAC: using the v2.0 gacutil (that you downloaded from the NET 2.0 SDK), copy it in the location where the v2.0 CustomMarshallers.dll assembly is located (C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727) and, from a command prompt placed in that location, run: gacutil /if CustomMarshalers.dll.
3. Check if the correct version of the CustomMarshalers.dll is GAC-ed (2.0) (in C:\Windows\Assembly)
4. Attempt to install the F5 Management Pack again.
Let us know how it goes.

Sorry for the delay with the reply to this.
Verified the installation of the v.2.0 CustomMarshalers.dll into the GAC:

C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727>gacutil /l CustomMarshalers

Guess my next move is to reinstall .Net 2.0 and try again. I'll give it a shot and re-post. Thanks for your help.

Update: Reinstalled .Net 2.0, as well as .Net3.5SP1. Same result. - Dave_Ruddell_79Historic F5 AccountGal,
I have put together a small program that will test the "exact" problem area you seem to be running into. Unfortunately, the maximum attachment size on this forum is 100kb, so I will send you an email with the program and instructions on how to use it.
-Dave - Dave_Ruddell_79Historic F5 AccountGal,
We have just released a new version of the Management Pack today that includes a fix for the issue we've been working on. You can download it from here: F5 MPack v2.1.1.140 . Let us know if this works or if you are still running into any issues. Thank you for your patience through all of this.

Hi Dave,
still having issues... just tried installing the newest version - 2.1.2.178 - it imports the MP into SCOM successfully (I can see it in the console) but then the installer times out on the mp import verification process, and then terminates and uninstalls everything...
Guess I still need your hep to get the MP installed.

Gal - Dave_Ruddell_79Historic F5 AccountHey Gal,
A couple things. Is the System Center Configuration (Operations Manager Config) service running? And if so, is it one of the services that is set up as a clustered resource? This service is in charge of writing the event that we are looking for in the event log (1210). Perhaps you can try installation again and check in the Operations Manager Event Log for this 1210 event, or feel free to export the event log and send it to me through email. I can look through it and try to identify why Setup isn't finding the verification information we're looking for.
Thanks,
-Dave
