upgrade to 10.2.4 from 9.4.8

Hi,

Presently my F5 boxes are in Active/Standby and running on 9.4.8 in HD1.1. Can you please let me know details setps -

a) to install 10.2.4 on HD1.2 (so that at any time I can rolled back to 9.4.8 using switchboot utility)

b) Do I need to re-configure the HA settings after the upgrade?

c) Steps to install Hotfix HF6?

Thanks/ Somnath

  • F5 published a guide about this upgrade here:

  • Hi,

I want to keep existing 9.4.8 (HD1.1) alongside 10.2.4 and I have checked the document and found "use partitions to maintain the version 9.3.x or 9.4.x software alongside version 10.x"

Below is the command to install 10.2.4 in in HD1.2, can you please clarify -is this command format/erase any config settings for HD1.1 -9.4.8?

    image2disk --instslot=HD1.2 --format=partitions BIGIP-10.1.0.123.0.iso

    Thanks/ Somnath

  • No, that will just install 10.2.4 to a new partition, HD1.2 that you specified in the command. 9.4.8 will continue to exist in HD1.1 and you can boot back into it from 10.2.4 whenever you like. No configurations will be lost. You may encounter issues getting the configuration to load on v10.2.4 however. Some manual configuration modifications may be needed to get it to work in v10.

  • If I will not format and simply run the below command, is this works? Also how 10.2.4 in HD1.2 will get configuration from 9.4.8?

    image2disk --instslot=HD1.2 BIGIP-10.2.4.

  • Part of the installation of 10.2.4 into slot HD1.2 will include copying the configuration from your current partition into the new one. Some things changed in v10, so this is why I say you may encounter issues. SMP wrote up a good article on issues he encountered to give you an idea of things you may run into.

  • Thanks, also can you please reply on my 1st question --

If I will not format and simply run the below command, is this works?

    image2disk --instslot=HD1.2 BIGIP-10.2.4.

  • image2disk --instslot=HD1.2 BIGIP-10.2.4.

Can I install 10.2.4 on HD1.2 without formating the disk by running above command??

present software version running on F5-

    [som@DMZ-F5-1:Standby] ~ switchboot -l

    Current boot image:

    HD1.1 - BIG-IP 9.4.8 Build 407.0

    Default boot image:

    HD1.1 - BIG-IP 9.4.8 Build 407.0

    Available boot image(s):

    HD1.1 - BIG-IP 9.4.8 Build 407.0

    HD1.2 - BIG-IP 9.4.3 Build 1.4

  • Yes, you shouldn't need to run anything other than that command. It'll wipe out the 9.4.3 image and configuration from HD1.2 and install 10.2.4.

  • Thanks, actually I am bit confuse about these two commands, one without formatting and another one with format

    image2disk --instslot=HD1.2 BIGIP-10.2.4.

    image2disk --instslot=HD1.2 --format=partitions BIGIP-10.2.4

Also in the document there is a warning message mentioned as below

Warning: If you are upgrading to BIG-IP version 10.1 or later and you plan to maintain a mixed 9.x and 10.x environment, you must reformat the drive for the larger, version 10.1.x partition size. You cannot simply upgrade to version 10.1.x if you are using partitions. The 10.1.x versions of the software do not fit in partitions created with version 9.x or 10.0.x disk formatting.

I'd recommend checking the man pages for image2disk. I don't have a 9.x system to test with.
