Unable to open web console GUI for BIG-IP LTM

Hi Friends,

I am trying to practice BIG-IP LTM using Virtual Edition on my Vmware. I am following CBT Nuggets and have followed the below steps.

1.Downloaded the .ova file from F5 download site.

2.Deployed the .ova file on my Vmware machine.

3.Created the following interfaces on my Vmware machine as mentioned in the CBT Nuggets :

Network Adapter 1 Linked to vmnet1, host only(Subnet - 10.1.0.0/24)

Network Adapter 2 Linked to vmnet0, bridged (Subnet - 192.168.1.0/24)

Network Adapter 3 Linked to vmnet2, host only(Subnet - 10.2.0.0/24)

Network Adapter 4 Linked to vmnet3, host only(Subnet - 10.3.0.0/24)

4.Started the BIG-IP appliance and configured the address using "config" command as 10.1.0.145 255.255.255.0 for the mgmt interface.

I am unable to open this in my web browser now. I have disabled Proxy, Firewall and removed my Internet connection but still https://10.1.0.145 is not opening in my Browser(Firefox and IE).

Please note these are the only steps and I have not tinkered with any other configuration.

I need your help to continue with this.

Thanks in advance. Sagar

  • Can you ping 10.1.0.145?

When you set up the interfaces in VMware, did you set up vmnet to be connected to the local system? On a Windows box it'll create a new interface called vmnet1 and should have an IP of 10.1.0.1.

  • Hi Kevin,

THanks a lot for your reply.

I am unable to ping 10.1.0.145.

If you mean linking Network Adapters to Virtual Network by going to BIGIP Setings > Hardware, then yes I have set them up as following:

    Network Adapter 1 Linked to vmnet1, host only(Subnet - 10.1.0.0/24)

Network Adapter 2 Linked to vmnet0, bridged (Subnet - 192.168.1.0/24)

    Network Adapter 3 Linked to vmnet2, host only(Subnet - 10.2.0.0/24)

    Network Adapter 4 Linked to vmnet3, host only(Subnet - 10.3.0.0/24)

But I have not assigned them IP as I do not know how to do it.

Please find attached the Screenshots to help you understand this better. Thanks a lot again!

    Regards,

  • Anybody? please help? I have to get this started in order to continue my practicals. Please help.

  • This looks like a Windows system, yes? Open a command prompt and type:

    ipconfig

This should enumerate all of the interfaces attached to the local system, including any vmnet interfaces that you've configured to connect to the local system. Look for the vmnet1 interface and the IP address of that interface. It should be 10.1.0.1. If it isn't this, you'll need to go into the network settings of VMware and make sure that 10.1.0.0/24 is the defined subnet for vmnet1. Ultimately you should be able to ping 10.1.0.1.

  • Hi Kevin, Thanks for helping me out. I cannot see any vmnet1 in ipconfig. Please find below the command output :

Please let me know if I am missing anything.

    Thanks a lot Regards,

    Sagar

  • Notice how vmnet2 and vmnet3 are showing up? In the network settings for VMware (not the VM's properties), look at the vmnet1 interface. I'm not a Windows box right now, but you should see a checkbox that says something like "Connect this interface to the local system". This option needs to be checked, which should add the interface and you should see vmnet1 in your ipconfig.

  • Hi Kevin,

This is a Windows Machine and i have checked the below:

    1. cmd > ipconfig > was able to see VMnet1, 2 and 3.

    2. They are responding to ping.

    3. After the management IP is configured to 10.1.0.145 with 255.255.255.0 the ip is not pingable and unable to connect to GUI.

Please advise on how i can proceed further to fix this fault.

    Regards Rudran
