ssh apptunnel to a linux machine in company network

Dear sir/madame,

I do not know that the precise technical term is for this question but I hope the problem will be clear.

I have F5 Firepass connection to my company's network. All of the terminal servers are windows machines. The way I work now to access our linux machines in the same company network is:

1) open firepass connection

2) connect to the windows terminal server

3) open a putty session in that windows desktop

4) connect with putty (ssh) to the linux machine

The problem is, that this tends to be very slow, I suspect because of the data transfer needed for the whole windows screen refreshment. I guess this is not the ideal set up?

How can I connect directly to the linux machine without opening the windows terminal server?

I have tried to create an application tunnel, but it looks a bit technical and I could not find any example on how one can set up a simple putty connection in situation like this.

Would someone please show how this can be done?

My home computer is running on windows, and I have putty installed.

Thanks for your help.

  • App Tunnel -> Static Tunnel -> Remote host (ports) -> and then add the application so it can start for you.
  • after setting up the app tunnel, I can get so far that a F5 initiated pop-pup window says:

    "Status: AppTunnel Connection established"

from that point on, I am stuck. If I now start a putty session on my windows machine, and try to connect to the remote machine I just enter the ip address of the remote and its port number to the putty. but I get connection refused error.

Is there more detailed explanation for this kind of cases?

    thanks a lot

  • I have had successfully set up the APP Tunnel, and can get the login screen and all. But after around 15-20 seconds, it just disappears and can't go any furthur then that. I did check the checkbox for KeepAlive, but nothing yet.

    Any help is appreciated.
  • Phoibos: the static app tunnel definition you configure should auto-launch putty (or whatever client you configure) for you when the favorite is clicked by the user. Be sure that you added something like 'putty.exe 192.168.1.200' in the client section. Also add the server's destination address in the allow list.

    I hope this helps.

  • Hi Matt,

I had set up the Static App Tunnel and set up the Auto-Launch option for putty.exe 192.168.1.100 as you said in Firepass.

But when I login to firepass, I don't see the option for that in my allowed application list. I use web based login to Firepass, which shows me the options for me to login.

Am I missing any other settings?

    Thanks,
