Persistance for Service tier servers

Is there any guidance for whether persistence is beneficial for a service tier VIP? We have a 3 servers VIP that was set up with persistence. Some people in our org think this is correct but others feel that we should not have that setting enabled. I was wondering if there is any guidance information on what are best practices for service tiered VIPS and persistence.

It certainly depends on your application, but it often used. It really depends on how your application is coded. For example, if a user signs into your web site, but comes back 5 minutes later, will other servers in the pool know that she is already logged in? And, if the authorization is stored in some cookie, will the other servers be able pull her state information from a common database? But, if your site is simple, and you do not care which server your users go to (for example, image servers).

Note: Sometimes source address persistence can be problematic if all your users are coming from just a few ip addresses... they might all be load balanced to one server. Cookie persistence is thus recommended for http traffic.
