License upgrade on HA active/standby BIG-IP 2000

Hi,

We're planning to add F5-ADD-BIG-2200S on an Active/Standby BIG-IP 2000 device-group as below:

  1. Forcing the 2nd unit (Standby) to Offline
  2. Activating the license on the 2nd unit (current Offline-standby unit)
  3. Rebooting the 2nd unit (current Offline-standby unit)
  4. Releasing Offline on the 2nd unit (current Offline-standby unit)
  5. Failover the traffic by forcing offline on the 1st unity (current Active unit)
  6. Activating the license on the 1st unit (current Offline-standby unit)
  7. Rebooting the 1st unit (current Offline-standby unit)
  8. Releasing Offline on the 1st unit (current Offline-standby unit)
  9. Force Standby on 2nd node (current Active unit)

I would like to know if the plan is OK and we should expect any traffic interruptions.

Thank you!

The steps you have listed should work well for upgrading the licenses on these BIG-IPs.

Step 9 (force fail-over to 1st unit) isn't necessary but it does help to confirm that the 1st unit is functioning correctly.

If you don't have connection mirroring configured, then all the TCP connections will get reset each time you fail-over from one BIG-IP to the other BIG-IP. If you do have connection mirroring configured, you need to wait awhile between steps 8 and 9 if you want to minimize the number of TCP resets that occur during step 9. Once you release the 1st unit from Offline in step 8, it will take some time for the connections information on the 1st unit to match the 2nd unit. I'd suggest waiting 5 minutes between steps 8 and 9 (this is only if you are using connection mirroring).

Thank you Jeff. Is any traffic hiccup expected following this plan?
