IP DNS (GTM) what if clients are using IP address to access application instead of URL.

I have a question that i know that if client is putting this in URL xyz.com and routed to primary DC and when its unavailable then routed client to DR DC.

What is if client is accessing the application on the ip address of the primary site? what we will have to do then? what options do we have in this situation?

  1. Do we need to force clients to access application through other URL instead of IP?
  2. Can we change the ip of application and resolve that ip with the ip which clients are already accessing in GTM. Can GTM resolve one IP into another just like URL to IP?

Please help. Thanks

  • If the client uses IP instead of hostname then the client application won't even use DNS/GTM and will go direct. If you want a GTM/DNS based redundancy design (rather than a routing solution) you'll need to use FQDNs. So 1. is your best option 2. won't work as DNS is hostname to IP resolution.
