HA configuration ?

Has anyone got a HA (either active/active, or active/passive) setup working using the VE ? Any tips ?
  • Sure, here's a quick method for Active/Standby. It's not really adequate for a production environment - one would likely want to configure failover over some of the other interfaces on their BIGIP HA group.

    There is a lot of information on this topic in the manuals and on DevCentral.

    Almost all of the things I'm showing here can be customized - especially the ports and addresses.

    Pre-requisites:

    2 licensed VE BIG-IP's (10.1 trial or 10.2 is fine - this also works on hardware based BIG-IP platforms running 10.x) with management ports on the same virtual switch portgroup - or basically, the same layer2/3 topology.

    1) System->Platform tab

    1.1) instead of "single device" pick "redundant pair"

    1.2) set ID 1 for one VE and ID 2 for the other.

    2) System->High Availability->Network Failover tab:

    2.1) Check Enabled for Network Failover.

    2.2) Put in the mgmt address of each other's peer.

    Multicast Section of Network Failover:

    2.3) Configuration identifier: demo

    2.4) Remote address: 224.0.0.245

    2.5) Port: 8900

    3) Click update (at the bottom)

    4) Look in the top left area of the dashboard. One unit should stay Active, one should change to Standby. Voila!

  • I edited the instructions so as to clarify a few points about my simple configuration - not that anyone asked, I'm just feeling punchy.
  • I'm revisiting this, using licensed version of the VE, running v 10.2.2

    When I follow these instructions, both machines go 'Active', and even when I select to force one to syandby, it quickly returns to active. Will this be the case until I configure floating IPaddresses, or have I missed something ?

    Thanks !
