F5 VLAN
Hi Experts,
We have an F5 bx with many vlan out of which VLAN500 and VLAN501 needs to be renamed to
VLAN00 and VLAN401.
There is a STP conf in the F5 bx config that has these 2 VLANs mapped to it as below,
stp instance 0 {
trunks ABC {
external path cost 100
nternal path cost 100
}
vlans {
vlan500
vlan501
}
How to modify the VLAN names under the above STP confg?
Thanks- genseek

The safest option here is to create the two new VLANs and assign them to STP and relevant interfaces etc. as necessary. Then remove the Self IPs and any routing entries associated with them from the 5x VLANs and recreate with the 4x ones. This will involve downtime.
Alternatively you could effectively stop all LTM/TMM services and edit the configuration files manually changing all instances of 5x with 4x and then starting up again. However, if you miss anything the config will probably fail to load until you find and fix the issue. - genseek_32178

thank you for the response.
Could you please paste the command for the 2nd alternate option - of editing the configuration files and manually changing all instances of 5x with 4x. Infact, all command steps for editing the VLANs in the config file. - What_Lies_Bene1

Genseek, for option two you just need to use your preferred CLI text editor (such as vi or pico) to edit the files in the /config directory. It'll just be a case of searching for and replacing any instances of VLAN related config you find. To shut down all services before you do this: bigstart stop * should do it I think. Then use the same command but start to start up again. - genseek_32178

thanks Steve. That is exactly what i meed
What is the cmd to edit the files in /config directory. I mean how to get into the config file...then will search and change the vlan name...and then using what cmd we save the file back. - What_Lies_Bene1

Genseek, do you have any friends or colleagues who know their way around Linux? I can give you this info but if you don't know what you're doing or make a mistake you could really break things! - genseek_32178

I do not have friends with linux touch. So, please share the commands and i will ensure while making the change nothing is broken.
Also, please let me know if it is MANDATORY to learn Linux to get experts hands on with commands on F5 box? If so, please advice how would you suggest i can go about getting grip over linux.

OK. I'd certainly suggest that from a management and configuration point of view you should at least understand how to navigate the file system and edit files.
Regarding learning resources, just Google it. I found this which might make a good start around the filesystem: http://www.ee.surrey.ac.uk/Teaching/Unix/ and this for editing using vi: http://acms.ucsd.edu/info/vi_tutorial.html
So, for what you want to do, starting from the Advanced Shell;
*cd /config Move to config directory
*ls List files
*vi 'filename' Edit a file
*Enter /500 to search for the string 500
*Change the 5 to a 4 (put cursor under 5, hit delete, press i, enter 4, press ESC)
*Enter / to search for the next match
*Continue till you've done the whole file
*Enter :w:q to save and quit
*Repeat with next file etc. - What_Lies_Bene1

For information on what files are what either search ask.f5.com or grab a free copy of my book on the HMS from here: http://www.lulu.com/shop/steven-ive...61677.html

Thank you Steve, thanks a lot indeed for the information, guidance and advice.
However, am not able to locate the 'download' option in the above link on HMS link. - What_Lies_Bene1
