Deleting files in /var/tmp

Hi All,

I'm new here. Currently I have 2 unit of F5 BIGIP LTM ver4. I have problem in one of the box. It stated in the log hard disk full. All my latest configuration gone.

In the /log folder, the file size is really small. I found something in /var/tmp that quite big. The file is BIGIP_*_.im (50MB size). Can I delete this file? is there any link from the file in /var/tmp folder to the running system? what is the effect if I'm deleting it.

Thanks for your help in advance.

  • i have never used v4 but im file is installation file. i believe it is safe to delete.
  • Ok, thanks Nitass.. Then I found something in /var/spool/mqueue.. The file in the folder I think it is a log file because its generate daily. Total size quite big, around 170MB. Can it be cleared as well?..

Other than that, which in the system can be cleared/deleted?

  • i understand /var/spool/mqueue is for email. if you do not use it, i think it could be okay to delete them.

by the way, if you are in maintenance window, i think it might be good to call technical support. so, you may be able to have v4 engineer to help.

well, the configuration is in the folder /config. So there should be no problem for the config files if /var/tmp and /var/log are full, as those would be different filesystems. However, you will get other problems, as a lot of processes need some temp files, which will be created in /var/run or even /var/tmp.

BTW: If your root filesystem / is still full (contains /config), then you should look for files /tmp. However, I would not recommend to simply delte any files there, as some are in use. If you could send the output of "df -k" and "ls -al /tmp" we can possible identify some files that can be deleted.

  • After I'm deleting the *.im files in /var/tmp there is no error /var disk full. But I found something from the other box. The log showing something like below:

    Nov 8 20:05:54 f5b kernel: wd0g: hard error reading fsbn 407068 of 407056-407071 (wd0 bn 921148; cn 974 tn 11 sn 25) status 59 error 40

Does it means the disk corrupt/damage?
