4000s - SharePoint 2013 - Load Balancing - iApp - Monitors
I am trying to get some definitive information about the 4000s that the client I am at is running. The netadmin says that they can't do any kind of monitoring and that the load balancing is only ping testing which looks to me like the (Simple) Monitoring method.
The question is as follows:
Can the 4000s use Active or Passive monitors
If yes would the following article apply: https://support.f5.com/kb/en-us/solutions/public/15000/000/sol15043.html
My research details are below:
Methods:
Simple
Works well when you only need to determine the up or down status of a node. Can check the health of a node only, and not a pool member.
Active
Can check for specific responses Can run with or without client traffic Creates additional network traffic beyond the client request and server response Can be slow to mark a pool member as down
Passive
Creates no additional network traffic beyond the client request and server response Can mark a pool member as down quickly, as long as there is some amount of network traffic Cannot check for specific responses Can potentially be slow to mark a pool member as up

Hi Jeremy, the short answer is yes and yes. These BIG-IPs can do active monitoring and you should follow the SharePoint deployment guide (and use the iApp template if running 11.0 or later).
