Set a domain wide user cookie

Wondering if anyone sets a domain wide cookie to track a username for the session.

This would give you a way to identify the username as they visit numerous different virtual servers.

We have worked out a way to set this cookie from APM but wondering about how this could be anonymised or secured more than just a plaintext value, such as hashing the value?
