Feb 21, 2005Testing SOAP Application
There is a requirement to test an existing application which uses a .asmx extension. We need to do this to use a monitor succesfully in a Web Services environment. Can this b done in iRules or iControl to gather the information to allow us to monitor the server.

- Can you elaborate on this a bit? How exactly do you want to test your asmx application? You can create a health monitor that does basic http checking I'm not sure how you are tying testing the application with monitoring it. Isn't that the same thing?
You can use iRules to manipulate the decision making on the real-time traffic and you can use iControl to control system configuration including the monitors that are associated with specific servers.
You could also use external logic to monitor your applications and then use iControl to change the traffic management properties to those servers.
If you could provide a bit more info on what information you need to gather so that you can monitor the servers, that would be helpful.

OK - lets see (bear with me, I am not one of the application writers !)
In the first instance, we need to do a basic monitor on the server for the .asmx page. I believe this is achievable by using the SOAP monitor, but as yet have had no feedback on how this would be configured i.e. what the fields are expecting to be filled with.
Once we have determined the node is up in the pool, we then want to check other aspects of the application to ensure that it is doing more than purely responding to the initial page request. I think this needs either iRules to manipulate the data, or iControl to monitor the app in depth and report back - the only thing is I have not done this before and was hoping for some guidance and pointers, with maybe an example. - Brian_Gupta_115

I think what you are asking, is there a method to connect to the .asmx page to see what the response is, so that you can write a custom HTTP monitor.
Is this correct?
Thanks,
Brian
