Saving session id for multiple msie connections

I have seen a number of posts which mention Internet Explorer making one connection to send a client cert and a second connection to do an http request. The examples I have seen save/retrieve the session using "session add". If I want to request that msie does basic auth could this use a third connection? Will I have to store/retrieve the session ID for each type of operation?
