Quick Question - GTM Upgrade in two seperate DC's

We have two standalone LTM+GTM BIG-IP's in two separate DC's and plan to upgrade both units from 11.2.1 HF3 to 11.6.0 HF3.

 

The units are both apart of the same GTM sync group with "Synchronize" and "Synchronize DNS Zone Files" enabled. My question is, can I upgrade these units in separate maintenance windows? If so, do I have to disable "Synchronization" while the units are on two different versions of code?

    during a hotfix or upgrade, I've always made it a personal best practice to follow the steps outlined in Solution 6939. There are some instances where synchronization will work between versions, but personally I stagger LTM upgrade maintenance windows, but upgrade GTMs one at a time but in the same maintenance window.

    I tested this. The answer is No, I didn't have to disable Synchronization while the units were on two different versions of code. Everything worked ok while the units were on different versions, so I imagine you could do this during separate maintenance windows if you really needed to. I would probably recommend a freeze period after the 1st upgrade though.
