Migrate from Big-Ip LTM 3900 to 5000s
- Oct 12, 2016
Hi David,
First of all - Good question, I think that we'll be fast approaching people migrating between platforms for generations of devices...
So... Here's my experience migrating from BigIP 6900's to 7250v's with SFP configuration.
First of all, get the 3900's up to the version you're running on the new devices. I imagine 11.X?
Build all the specific VLAN/Interface configuration on your 5000S, dont' forget to include a VLAN for the HA, and configure any devices "around" the F5's
Night of the migration
The 3900's then need to be split as a pair, Force the Standby offline, and reset the device trust.
On the Active 3900 - Add one of the 5000S's as its peer, Sync config across. Failover to new 5000S (Test services) Force old 3900 offline Break device trust again Add 5000S to the other 5000S - Sync config across...
All should be well, and you'll have a nice new shiny pair of F5's with Migrated configuration.

Thanks Iain, that sounds like a pretty straight forward process.

Let me know how it goes.
There other ways, such as exporting an SCF file etc. It really depends on your environment and what license you've got.
Of course a maintenance window would be required.
