iControls / iRules Monitor Nodes

We currently have 780 web sites residing on 5 web servers. We are looking for a solution to monitoring the nodes with out having each node do an individual check. Something like a main monitor where the nodes are up or down as a result of one check and not a check for each node. iControl or iRules might help if someone has any ideas please post.

Thanks -

  • I'm not sure I follow what you're trying to do.

Are you trying to set up a monitor that will cause the load balancer to think everything is down if a single node is down?

The monitors have to check each node, otherwise they won't know if that node is up or down. So (afaik) you have to have the monitors do individual checks. However, I believe you can set up the pools such that they have a minimum number of nodes that have to report as UP for the pool to be UP. I'm not seeing that setting in a quick look at the interface, but I could have sworn I came across it at one point (maybe in the iControl API).

Am I understanding correctly what you're trying to do?

Definitely you'd have to have some device checking/reporting each node's status.

I think aherrman is remembering is the monitor setting -- with y monitors configured, at least x of y monitors need to be up or the pool member is marked down. Could be helpful in this situation, or could be exactly the opposite of what you're looking for.

Clarification of the real goal(s) would be very helpful in determining alternatives.
