F5 BIG-IP-VE OVA Thin or Thick Provisioned Hard Drives?

When deploying a Big-IP VE, I understand that the best practice is thick provisioning for production and thin provisioning for a Lab. With that said, I am looking for why thick provisioning for production? In addition, what are the drawbacks to thin provisioning a production instance? Any assistance would be much appreciated. Thanks.

  • with thin provisioning the system has to allocate the space when it is needed, it might then not be available or take time. with thick provisioning the system will allocate the space right away and you are sure you will get it in time.

it is not "best practice" per se to do thin provisioning in lab environments in my opinion, but because space is probably more limited you will end up doing so.
