Mar 31, 2009Configuration Move from 9.4.6 to Ver. 10
I have a spare 6400 setup in my QA environment with Version 10 Build 5460 running on it. I want to copy the config off of my production box, running version 9.4.6 over to the QA box. I thought that grabbing the bigip.conf file and moving it over to the QA machine would work but even after rebooting it didn't seem to pick up any changes.
What is the best way for me to copy this configuration over? Set it up as a standby peer and config sync the boxes? I seem to remember that config sync just moves over three files to the peer device, but I can't remember what those are.
Any ideas or thoughts on the best way to proceed?
Also does anyone know if there will be a OTCU (One Time Conversion Utility) released to help migrate configs over from 9.x over to 10?

Do you have 9.4.6 running in one of the other boot slots on your lab machine? Easiest way might be to move your prod config into the 9.4.6 bootslot, then re-install v10 from there, which will carry your configuration forward.
I haven't played with the conversion issues much yet, so I'm not sure how v10 would handle the single configuration file, but that's worth a shot. On your prod box, you could issue b export /var/tmp/prodconfig.scf and then copy the file off to your lab box (same directory) then issue b import /var/tmp/prodconfig.scf - naladar_65658

Well, when I updated the QA lab machine to version 10 I also updated it to LVM disk format and in two of my boots slots have V10 B5460. The third is empty. From what I remember from the documentation you can't run a 9.x version along with a 10.x version unless you stick with the partition based disk format.
I will double check myself on that though... I've been reading a lot lately and could have misread it.
I will also try the single configuration file today and report back my findings.
Thank you for your advice citizen_elah. - JRahm

ah, yes, if you've gone the LVM disk format, you're right, v9 isn't supported there. Maybe the single config file route will work out for you. - naladar_65658

I tried the .scf, but haven't had much luck so far. I changed the management port, management gateway, removed the fail over peer info, changed the hostname and imported the SSL certs off the prod box over to the QA box.
Doing that took care of the initial errors, but now when I run the import on the lab box it is kicking out an error out saying "The requested parent profile (http-acceleration) was not found." So the http-acceleration profile is a parent of a WAM profile and the config import is bombing out on that. And that might be because I do not believe that the lab boxed is licensed for the WAM module. I had forgotten about that...
