Can F5 health check / irule update dns A records after checking health?

Can F5 health check / irule update dns A records after checking health? I'm looking to see if the F5 virtual server can also act similar to a Microsoft cluster where if a failover occurs, the cluster updates DNS records to the secondary ip address.

Much appreciated for any suggestions or tips. Thanks.

  • That's usually something that is done with a GTM, DNS manipulation.

A thought though. If you're wanting to have traffic go to a different VIP in the event of a failure, you could use the "virtual" command in the iRule to map it across the back plane. Or if in a different datacenter, you could have the VIP as a pool member in a pool using priority groups.

Please excuse me for asking, but what is the "virtual" command to map it across the back plane? Did you also mean multiple pools for a single LTM VIP or multiple pools for a GTM wide ip?
  • Create a GTM Wide IP with Pool containing the 2 pool members which are the F5 virtual server one with high priority and one with high priority and use global availability as the load balancing method.

GTM will normally return high priority VIP as DNS A record wheh high priority VIP is down F5 will return the low priority VIP as DNS A record.
