BIG-IP LTM 1500 does not boot !!! please help

hi,

I have got a problem with my BIG-IP 1500 system.

the BIG-IP was working fine with v9.3.1 and

I was doing a version downgrade to BIGIP V.9.1.2 (clean install ) , when the BIG-IP exited the installation process and came back to the shell prompt.

i rebooted the system from that prompt but the BIG-IP would not boot anymore to the pre-installed OS.

I get the below error message on the console :

--------------MESSAGE BEGINS HERE---------------

System is booting, please wait...

Press Ctrl-c to stop autoboot: 5 4 3 2 1 0

kernel.core_uses_pid = 0

kernel.core_pattern = /var/core/%e.sccp.core

Host Console Shell --- Press ( for command menu.

-------------MESSAGE BEGINS END ------------------

The BIG-IP system stops at the above message and when I press "( " as displayed on the console,

I get the below command menu :

-----------MENU STARTS HERE---------------

[hostconsh] Command Menu:

1 --- Connect to Host subsystem console

2 --- Select Host subsystem boot mode: boot from local drive

3 --- Select Host subsystem boot mode: netboot manufacturing test

4 --- Select Host subsystem boot mode: netboot from external server

5 --- Reboot Host subsystem (sends reboot command)

6 --- Halt Host subsystem (sends halt command)

7 --- Reset Host subsystem (issues hardware reset--USE WITH CARE!)

8 --- Reboot SCCP subsystem (issues hardware reset--USE WITH CARE!)

9 --- Halt SCCP subsystem (issues hardware shutdown--USE WITH CARE!)

D --- Run Diagnostics

I --- Run BIG-IP Installer (issues hardware reset--USE WITH CARE!)

B --- SCCP baud rate configurator

L --- SCCP login

N --- SCCP network configurator

---------------MENU ENDS HERE------------------

But I don't know how to boot the BIG-IP from the above command menu.

have you ever had this kind of problem before ?

Please advise.

Thank you in advance.

  • How long did you wait after "Host Console Shell --- Press ( for command menu."?

If you selec the sequence you enter the SCCP hardware layer. At this point you might as well select either 7 or 8.

Otherwise reach for the phone and call F5 support.

  • hi,

I send the BIG-IP to the support vendor. They said the boot files of the LB were damaged.

So they have fixed the problem.

It was not a harware problem. I think they just reset the BIG-IP..( I still don't know how they do that ..).

So next time someone else gets the same problem, please send the BIG-IP to the maintenance contractor.it's safe and the fastest track.

Anyway, thank you for ur reading.

    Sakolan.
  • you would think the install program would be smart enough and not allow you to downgrade. i'm running into the same problem 9.3.1 -> 9.2.3 and looking for solutions to unbricking my box. sending back to the vendor is not an option for me.

edit: the only way i found to bring it back alive is to pxe server the install.

I followed the instructions and downgraded all 3 slots on my 3400 from 9.3.1 to 9.1.0 via a PXE server, but it still will not boot.

I can PXE serve 9.3.1 nd get up and running, but I need to roll back to 9.1.0 and am stumped.

Is there a way to blow away any partition tables and have the 9.1.0 PXE installation create them from scratch?

    -Jon
  • I think all you have to do is to do PXE installation and do a clean install to version 9.1.0.

Check your PXE server is setup correctly.

your 3400 doesn't boot correctly ? what error messages are displaying during the booting sequence ?
