BIG-IP : irule HTTP_REQUEST event requires http profile

Why is it that including HTTP_REQUEST event processing in an irule requires the virtual-server to have an assigned http profile ?

The http profile lets the LTM know that it needs to inspect the traffic as HTTP. Once the LTM knows that it's looking at HTTP it looks deeper into the traffic and is able to see http events, like the http request you mentioned above.
Without the http profile, the http request event is not seen by the LTM.
