Wide IP and MX Records - My Nightmare

Current Configuration:

We have two GTMs in different sites in an Active/Active configuration. DNS Provider points to one GTM as primary and then second GTM as secondary. This set up was for Disaster Recovery purposes only. We implemented a plethora of Wide IPs which use Global Availability. The Wide IPs are typically subdomains such as testing.test.com.

Problem:

Due to a group wanting to use testing.testing.com as part of their mail configuration, I've been asked to add MX records for testing.test.com on the GTM. We cannot do zone transfers for test.com. Any suggestions or insight in how to accomplish this? I've tried adding a zone, testing.test.com, in ZoneRunner and then add an MX record for it and the update fails.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

  • What version of GTM (or BIG-IP DNS) are you running? In later releases, you specify the type of Wide IP (A, AAAA, MX, etc.), in which case I believe you can create a separate MX-type Wide IP for testing.test.com to provide your MX query responses.

  • Hi,

We're currently running version 11.6 HF4. Do you know what version you can specify MX records as Wide IPs?

  • Support for additional DNS record types in a Wide IP was introduced in v12 (at the same time "GTM" was renamed to "BIG-IP DNS"). v12 supports A, AAAA, MX, SRV, NAPTR, and CNAME records.
