Vista and Firepass SSL VPN

Hello - I am having an issue where we connect to the firepass with a Vista client and a session is established, however, when you try to connect the network access component (connect the SSL VPN), I get an Unknown RAS error and the attempt to establish the VPN fails... I have 6.0.2 code on the firepass.

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. thanks,

  • Hello, I am having the same issue working with vista client, IE7 browser

    I have FirePass build :URM-6.01-20070302

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. thanks,

  • Hi,

Vista wasn't really supported in 6.0.1 until some number of Hotfixes later. 6.0.2 should be sweet though i've never had any issues connecting via Network Access from my Vista box. If you are having problems I would make sure you are running 6.0.2 (or even better 6.0.3 is out this week i hear) with the latest cumulative patch kit. Remember that Network Access needs to run an ActiveX control so make sure you have admin rights on your machine to download and run the ActiveX. Also, you need to make sure that the Telephony Service is running in Windows Services. FirePass uses the Telephony Service (TAPI) to make calls to the PPP dialer.

If you're at a last resort download f5wininfo.exe from Device Management -> Client Downloads -> Windows (x86) -> Download (tab). You'll find a link called "Download Components Trouble Shooting Utility". Download this file (f5wininfo.exe) and run it on the Vista box with the problems and select Tools / Remove Components. This will clear out any F5 ActiveX controls so your PC will download them fresh next time you connect.

    Hope this helps you out.

    Cheers,

  • I found a pack (224mb) in downloads.f5.com... but I need only urvpn.exe (6.0.2 or .3)... Anyone can help me?

    Thanks.
  • Hi There,

I would grab version 6.0.3 (cause it's the latest of course) and install it on your FirePass controller. Then when you connect to your FirePass controller and launch a Network Access tunnel the urvpn.exe file will be downloaded and installed.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers,

  • In case it's of any use - We were having the same problem ("Unknown RAS error") with Vista systems connecting to our 6.0.2 Firepass with one of our VPN's.

All other VPN's worked fine, and the problem VPN worked fine with XP clients. It turned out that we had a "/" character in the VPN name, which works fine with XP clients, but not with Vista. From the 6.0.3 release notes:

Character limitations with Windows Vista standalone client (CR78170)

When creating a network access favorite, you cannot use the following characters when creating names for your favorites: \ / : * ? < >. This is also true if you use Japanese characters as part of the name. Doing so causes the error message Unknown RAS error to appear.

I renamed the problem VPN to remove the "/", and Vista clients can now bring it up without error.

    Good luck,
