upgrading LTM from 9.4.5 to 9.4.8 to 10.2.4
Hello,
I am scheduled to to upgrade an ltm tomorrow. My first time. Looking at the upgrade procedure, I have a few question regarding the upgrade since I have no resources to try the upgrade process.
- Is there a show command to see what are the available install locations or is that something that will just pop up when I do the "im local-install-9.4.8.355.0.im"?
-
Do I need to reboot the system after step 1? What is the reboot command to indicate the boot location?
-
After installing 10.2.4 iso, does it automatically reboot the system? Do I need to change switchboot location?
Thanks for any help.

Before getting into this, I recommend to check the current configuration for compatibility issues regarding the software you want to migrate to. Especially have a look at iRules in use.
Ideally you are able to test the migrated configuration on a BIG-IP Virtual Edition (runs as well with TMOS v10.2.4) in advance. With TMOS v10 the logical volume manager (LVM) was introduced to replace the "legacy" and "advanced" file system partitioning. Actually TMOS v10 supports both LVM and the advanced partitioning. In v9 you have only two installation partions only. You can use "switchboot -l" to check the current and alternative installation volume. Copy the base installation image to /var/tmp/ and run the following to install to HD1.2 and keep partitioning:image2disk --instslot=HD1.2 --setdefault /var/tmp/BIGIP-10.2.4.577.0.isoRun the following to install to HD1.2 and use LVM:
image2disk --instslot=HD1.2 --format=volumes --setdefault /var/tmp/BIGIP-10.2.4.577.0.isoIf I remember right, it will reboot to destination volume automatically if using the following additional switches:
--setdefault --rebootBe prepared for a rollback! Especially if you try the LVM approach you will need an installation medium to install v9 from scratch.
Have an external configuration backup. Get familiar with the v10 HA concept in advance as you may need to adjust a couple of settings. Serial console (never change from 19.200 8N1) is mandatory from my perspective. From my perspective an upgrade like this should be done by an experienced consultant as it has a couple of risks. In any case plan a long maintenance window.
