Traffic Class

Hi All,

Can someone please help me understand the purpose of Traffic class ?

After creating and assigning a traffic class to a VIP, what does it do? And how/where to use traffic class?

Regards, Chandu

  • Hello,

    A brief overview is here: https://support.f5.com/kb/en-us/products/big-ip_ltm/manuals/product/ltm-concepts-11-4-0/19.html

    "After creating and assigning a traffic class to a VIP, what does it do? And how/where to use traffic class?"

    This alone will not do much. It just specifies that your Virtual Server is a part of a specific Traffic Class. In other words, it's now categorized as "some kind of traffic".

    Creating multiple Traffic Class groups helps you build granularity which will give you extended control over different types of traffic flow. What ever you do with that control is up to you. For instance, you can apply specific traffic optimization configurations (WAN Optimization Module) per Traffic Class. You can also refer to Traffic Class from inside the iRules by using the

    LB::class
    function.

    Using Traffic Class is optional and often avoided completely. However, if you have a production site in a country where uplink bandwidth cost is a lot more than normal, implementing various optimizations with the help of this functionality can be well worth your time.
