As it is, the license activation would fail if you tried to run BIG-IP in vmware. Check this post (Click here) for details. If this is something you'd like to see F5 support, I'd suggest you open a case with F5 support (https://websupport.f5.com) asking for your case to be attached to the existing Request For Enhancement.

I see what you mean - Still it seams like there should be a generic 30 day lic or something - hoolio

You can request an evaluation unit from F5 sales. But yes, it would be nice to do a demo using a vmware instance. Another support case demonstrating the demand for this would help raise the visibility of the request.

Hi bzzjh,
This is expected. The license activation process ties the registration code to key hardware components to ensure the key can only be used on a single unit. The vmware hardware profile won't match what F5 expects from their branded kit. Currently, they don't support the public running their software in vmware. There is an existing request for them to support this. If you check this post (Click here), you can see how to open a case with F5 to request they support this in the future. I also included some examples of business justification for this. The more people open a case asking for wmware support, the more visibility the request gets.

This is something that can only really be pursued with a support case and followed up via your F5 salesperson.

Hello,hoolio
As far as I know,F5 some of the internal personnel has a special license,it can active bigip on vmware,Once,I have called a friends,He works for F5,I ask to the special license, unfortunately,he can't offer this license to me ,if he do it,he would be fired, because it violates some copyright laws. - hoolio

Yep. I know that F5 runs LTM internally on vmware and it's just restricted by license. I've been trying to push them to allow external people like partners or customers to do this as well. If you open a case with F5 requesting this functionality, it raises the standing of the request within F5.

Maybe they could inject some latency and loss into the stream on the customer release versions so functionality could be tested but no one dare take a system like that to production...
