New image doesn't install on existing partition - V 10.1.0
Hello Folks,
I am facing an issue while installing a new BIG-IP OS to the 1600 appliance. The issue is, I can see 2 partitions available, in which one partition has the currently loaded BIG-IP OS, I want to upgrade 10.1.0 to 11.2.1 HF10.
I have uploaded the image to F5, however unable to install the image on another available partition. It just gives me "Failed" as status while installing. Do I need to format that partition before installing 11.2.1? If yes, any help formatting the partition?
Thanks folks! Darshan

Hi Nitass,
Surprise surpirse! I was not aware about this. However I didn't follow the steps so far, as I couldn't reach customer.
I am sure the HDD is not faulty, as the appliance is running using a different IMAGE installed on different partition. The issue is specifically with partition only. Not with the HDD.
Any suggestions?

the different image is not 11.x, is it?
as nathan said, this is about formatting scheme. in 11.x, volume formatting scheme is required (i.e. you have to re-format hard disk).

Yes, the different image is 11.X Does it mean I need to format the whole disk and install the new image from USB or DVD?
Thanks, Darshan

currently you have 2 partitions/slots; one is 10.1.0 and the other one is 11.2.1.
you tried to install 11.2.1 hf10 on 10.1.0 partition/slot but failed. am i correct?
how did you install 11.2.1 hf10? did you switchboot to 10.1.0 partition/slot and then installed 11.2.1 hf10?
have you tried to create new partition/slot (e.g. hd1.3) and install 11.2.1 hf10?
e.g.

Hi Nitass,
you tried to install 11.2.1 hf10 on 10.1.0 partition/slot but failed. am i correct? Yes, correct.
ow did you install 11.2.1 hf10? did you switchboot to 10.1.0 partition/slot and then installed 11.2.1 hf10? - Yes, I did the same.
Actually when 10.1.0 was loaded from the suspicious partition, the appliance wasn't reachable or responding. While connecting over console, we found that it was showing only UNIX commands, and no BIG-IP commands on CLI.
I thought to reboot the appliance from a different partition which had the same image installed i.e. 10.1.0. It ran well.
Now, I have installed the new image i.e. 11.2.1 to the suspicious partition, and it is not installing.
Any suggestion?

sorry i mistyped. the correct method is that you have to switchboot to 11.2.1 partition/slot and then install 11.2.1 hf10 to 10.1.0 partition/slot. you know it is not possible to install software/hotfix on current active partition/slot.

Yes, but the other partition is not loading the appliance itself. That partition is failed or corrupted somehow. :(

in that case, can you try to delete volume then re-create it again or create a brand new volume?
tmsh delete sys software volume ... tmsh create sys software volume ...
