Jan 30, 2012My first BIG-IP upgrade
Hi guys/gals,
I have a change upgrading some LTMs from 10.2.0 to 10.2.3
I'm having a bit of issue wrapping my head around the concept and I don't want to mess this up. This is VERY important to my customer.
From what I understand I have to :
1.Copy the new image to /sharred/images
2.Check md5
2.Check partioning with "switchboot -l" and make sure i have a free partiton
3.If necessary make new partition with image2disk
4."b software" command to install a new image.
5.Boot new image as default
6.Reboot
What I still have issue with (if what I described above is correct) is how to do it on active/redundant pair ?
Do I have to check how they are peered i.e network/serial and turn of high-avalability during change because different BIG-IP versions don't support redundancy ?
If I do it on standby first how can I test to make sure it is ok before moving to the active ?
Any advice is welcome.

The virtual is a .ova file which I got running in Virtual Box. Only problem is I can;t upgrade it. I tried both the 10.2.3 .iso and .ova files but with no luck. I looked at a VE edition manual and it says to upgrade from 10 VE to 11 VE you need to download the .iso. I didn;t get that ,did you upload iso file to /shared/images and upgrade using webui, bigpipe or tmsh command? - r23_78178

Okay , just discovered one more thing.
I have MD instead of HD volumes.
What sort of behavior should I expect ?
Can I just create a new volume , install on it and make it primary ?
I noticed there are issues to downgrading, i.e sol11414. What about upgrading ? Can I keep both new and old versions ? - nitass

Thank you for your response.
I noticed sol11215 before , but I can't do Step 4 for Network Failover TMM (Temporarily set the Redundancy State Preference setting of both units to None.) I will upgrade the Standby and failover to the Standby , test and then do the active.
Also , do you need to configure volume mirroring in any way ? Or do I just create a new volume (mine MD1.1-1.3 are full with 10.2.0) and install as you did ? - nitass

Also , do you need to configure volume mirroring in any way ? Or do I just create a new volume (mine MD1.1-1.3 are full with 10.2.0) and install as you did ?hard disk mirroring is done automatically. what we have to do is to just install to an empty or a new slot. for example, when we run "b software desired MD1.4 product BIG-IP version 10.2.3 build 112.0", bigip will create MD1.4 on the fly and install 10.2.3 software for us.
by the way, the latest hotfix for 10.2.3 now is hotfix1. i suggest applying the latest hotfix if possible.
cheer! - r23_78178
