Multiple Applications Behind F5.

I have 2 servers (Boxes) both installed with IBM websphere.

I am running 4 different applications on each server.

Server 1 Server 2

WebSphere WebSphere

Application A Application A

Application B Application B

Application C Application C

Application D Application D

I am planning to put F5 6400 Box in the front.

So, what are the different and effective ways of loadbalancing traffic for each application.

  • Are you connecting directly to the applications over their Websphere ports (i.e. http://server1:9080/appA) or you will have some kind of webserver in front of them (i.e. IHS)?

    If using WebSphere ports just create different VIPS for each app. You could even use the same IP address for all of the VIPs and differentiate by port. Then create separate pools, again, 1 for each app. Assuming you care about persistence, you'd need to create and associate a persistence profile for each VIP.

    If you are putting a webserver in front of them, then you'd need to only create 1 VIP and 1 pool. Assuming you care about persistence, you'd need to create and associate a persistence profile to the VIP.
  • Thanks a lot. I got my query answered.

    However , if i have a database server specified for each application, how can i loadbalance. Every application and databases are behind the same pair of loadbalancers.

    This is the setup i have.

    LB------------>App1---------->Database 1

    LB------------>App2---------->Database 2

    LB------------>App3---------->Database 3

    LB------------>WebServer1------------------>LB------------>App4-Database 4

    Secondly, does it have any issues if i have everything in one subnet/VLAN.

    Thanks

  • To add to my query, What are the various problems and issues i can face if i seggregate the application servers from database servers using VLANS and let the loadbalancer act as gateway between the vlans. If it doesnt affect, what are the positive points about it.
