Management and virtual server on same subnet

Hello,

We have a requirement to set up a virtual server (ipforwarding only) which will be on the same subnet (and vlan) of the F5 management port. (this is an 8900 running LTM V9). The virtual server will obviously have a different IP to the F5 management IP. I would like to know if there may be any issues with doing this, I personally cannot see any. Thanks

    Hi Chris,

I don't think this will work due to architectural limitations with LTM. See this post for details and other options:

  • I'm with hoolio. If you tried creating a self-ip on that subnet, you'd get an error message saying the network is already defined. If I recall, the F5 checks its mgmt routes before its other ones so if a request is destined for that subnet, it would use the mgmt interface.
  • i don't know if i'm missing something here, but if you want to manage big ip in the same vlan as the virtual server, why don't you just manage it through it's interface in that vlan? rather than using the official management interface

He wants to add a Virtual Server to the VLAN on which his mgmt interface exists.

Thanks for all the answers, Hoolio's link had lots of detail in that. We moved the management port over and it worked fine now.
