Feb 03, 2010LTM Volume Formatted
Hello All - what's the best way to recover a LTM 3600 after an accidental format of the volume ? The command issued was meant to format the volume HD1.2, but HD1.1 got formatted accidentally.
Any advice is much appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Hi GCK,
Which LTM 10.x version do you want to install? Do you have any valid volumes now?

Aaron - the current ver is 10.0.1 on both volumes.
I get the bash> after I reload the unit. I take it that this is due to the format issued.
Is there a way to load the unit via HD1.2 ?

Are you using volumes or slots? Either way, you can use switchboot to boot to HD1.2 if that still has a valid installation. For volumes, you should be able to reinstall 10.0.1 on HD1.1 from the GUI. Or you could use image2disk from HD1.2's command line.
The 10.0.1 LTM release notes should give you some good detail on the steps for (re-)installing:

Aaron - this is the situation, I think after the format, the LTM rebooted to the MOS. I was able to capture the last few messages b4 the unit went down. Not sure if this helps, but pls see below.
info: Repository tm_install version/release is 2.5.0/80.0
info: System tm_install version/release is 2.5.0/80.0
info: Requested install image location (sda.1) is default for boot.

info: Begin Install: BIG-IP 10.0.1 build 283.0 from BIGIP-10.0.1.283.0.iso to sda, 1
info: Updating maintenance OS.
info: No MOS update necessary; system has 2.6.0 - 234.0, media has 2.5.0 - 80.0

What do you see on the serial console now during boot up? While the unit boots, what does the grub menu show for each slot?

during the reboot, there's an option for either EUD or TMOS.
when I select TMOS, i get the bash> & when I type in "info", i get to see options like
diskinit
image2disk
cpconfig
dhclient
I think both the volumes & partitions along with all the data has been deleted.
Looking into options to use the image2disk to recover the system.. - offset_68718Historic F5 AccountMight I ask what command(s) you ran to accidentally format this system?
That bash prompt you see is the Maintenance OS (MOS). Run this command from the MOS (or a bootable TMOS location)if you haven't reinstalled already.
tmidiag -d
That should dump your bootloader and all your system formatting. We can go from there. image2disk can easily be used to install to this system and recover it. - hoolio

Hi offset,
tmidiag has quite useful info. You can use the partition info from 'tmidiag -d' to mount other slot's partitions (useful for copying a license or other files between slots without switchbooting back and forth).

That's a nice gem I wasn't aware of...thanks! - hoolio

That looks handy, but the most common thing I need to do is grab a bigip.conf or bigip.license from an inactive slot and use it on the current slot. cpcfg looks like it does the opposite and loads the full config via a UCS.
