Sep 29, 2009LTM and presenting multiple mac address for VS
Guys
Were faced with a problem where by a router is not load balancing traffic equally between the router itself and the L2 switch downstream , this is most visible on a VS that exceeds 1gb traffic.
(Router) --[2 x1gb L2 links]-> (L2 switch) --[ 4gb trunk]->(BigIP.9.4.6)
The router vendor has advised that the router is using a mac hashing algorithm to send traffic to the destination ,and in our scenario 95% traffic is for one VS that exceeds 1gb , therefore due to the load-balancing inconsistencies of the router across their aggregated Ethernet trunk we have one link completely saturated and hardly any traffic across the other.
Question:
as the router is load balancing on the mac of the VS , is there some way creating 2 mac address for a VS ... or will this just cause more problems that what it could fix ?
Any toughs welcomed ...
Thanks
Ian

Hi Ian,
I don't think there is a way to support two MACs for the same VIP address on LTM. Could you trunk the two links instead?

Hi Aaron
The two links are in a trunk configuration , but we are running a L2 vpn ( ccc ) from our one datacentre to the other to allow the two bigips's to share the same subnet ranges ..and the problem lies with load balancing over the trunk when using a L2 vpn .... were currently in communication with the vendor TAC..( for 6 months already) but in the interim i just wanted to explore other options.
Many thanks for your response - JRahm

you could run the same services on multiple vips.
