Is there an iControl 9.x emulators?

I'm doing some R&D with load balancing and would like to develop software against iControl 9.x.

Is there a software emulator for the F5 hardware to do some basic testing? I would like to practice with the API while the management types debate acquisition.

  • Unfortunately the answer is no. You can still develop and application but you can't make any of the calls unless you have a device to communicate with. We are working on options for you developers out there but there is nothing available yet - and the answer is "I don't know if or when..." for those of you that are going to ask when what we are working on is going to be available.

Rest assured though, that if we do make something available, you all on DevCentral will be the first to find out.

  • Just thinking out of the box here, but what if there was a DevCentral-based iControl validator, where you could either run your code against remotely, or upload your code into a web-based shell and test "locally"? At least then an emulation of any kind could be completely controlled within the walls of F5, or wouldn't require emulation at all (though dedicating hardware to the effort would be costly)

  • Good thoughts? Back in the SEE-IT days, our team had a public facing BIG-IP that we loaned out in 24-hour windows to customers to try the product against. Would you all find this valuable to have a way to request remote access to a BIG-IP hosted at F5? If so, I can look into getting this process back in place for the development community.

  • I see that as a definite benefit for those who do not have lab equipment.
