CirrocumulusI guess the best solution for you is the rewrite profile for portal access.
The external users will see something like:
$$/
Where portal.lab.local is my lab virtual server, but in your case will be the external DNS name. You can then point to whatever name you want internally.

APM will make sure it rewrites any links in the pages.
