idle timouts for the sessions
I've setup a vip with two pool members all set to (*) all ports. This is for some AS400 applications. Seems to be working except that admin wants no idle timouts for the session. My questions is can this affect the LTM resources. If I remove idle timeout, will the LTM start to run out of session connections or in anyway be degraded. They run process that can run for 3 or 4 day with idle times in between. What are my options other than just turn off idle timers for this VIP. Maybe the LTM is not the best option this deployment, i think currenly they are using a windows based load balance setup. Im a little uneasy about this, whats your recommendations. Admin say's when the process stops, they will end the connection. But I don't think this will actually clear the session"socket" though the F5.
A few options to consider;
- Keep the idle timeout and request the clients to enable TCP keep-alives either via their TN5250 client or the OS (this would be my recommendation).
- Remove the idle timeout, set a connection limit on the virtual in question, and run a regular maintenance job that clears the sessions.
- Set a very long idle timeout of 4 days or more.
