Help identifying the cause of a memory leak.

Hi,

we have a problem where our BigIPs are suffering from what appears to be a memory leak. Over time the amount of ram being used just increases, and when it reaches a certain point the BigIP basically goes bonkers and starts creating huge ammounts of connections to various internal hosts which in turn floods those hosts. The only way to get things back to normal is to reboot the BigIP. Now we actually have two BigIPs in a active/standby configuration so we can gracefully manage this situation somewhat, although it is anoying to have to force a failover and then reboot what was the active unit. The rate of the memory leak does seem to increases as the load on the unit increases.

So what I am after is suggestion as to how I can track what is causing the memory leak. I am assumiung it's probably an iRule. Are there any command line tools or metrics on ram useage for iRules? Has anyone else suffered this and if so how did you identify the cause?

As far as I know both BigIPs are running the latest 9.x build of the firmware.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Regards

  • Craig: If you've not done so already, I would absolutely open a support case on this. They'll help you track down what is going on. Be sure and mention the behavior and have them help you track down a core file if one exists. If you've got one, send it up to support - this will speed up the process.

  • Hi Matt,

Ok, I'll do that. Our support is actually with a 3rd party company who I assume will be able to escalte/open a case with F5 on our behalf. I was sort of hoping there were some tools hidden away somewhere that might disclose how much ram is being consumed per rule.

    Thanks for your reply.
