The BIG-IP monitor gathers metrics and statistics information that the Local Traffic Manager acquires through the monitoring of its own resources.

Generally, the BIG-IP GTM monitors operate in the following manner:

At regular intervals, the gtmd process sends a probe request for the status of the monitored object to a dynamically selected available big3d process on a BIG-IP device located within the local datacenter. The big3d process performs the requested probe and broadcasts the result to all listening gtmd daemons in the sync group.
