FTP disruptions at about 4:00 AM

Hi, our customer is facing issues with FTP connections, it is normally working fine, but sometimes at about 4:00 they notice disruption/timeouts when accessing the service through VIP.

I know that LB is doing configuration reload at 4:02 AM, I would suspect this one, but we have many another LBs which are working normally, no complaints about services.

How do you see it, can this config reload disturb long-run connections of FTP, or should I focus to something else? BTW, it's hard to get any dumps and so on, since it happens just sometimes (1x a week) and there is nothing in F5 logs either.

Thanks, Zdenek

  • Hi Zdenda,

I would eliminate the config reload as a suspect first because it's something I think you can quickly rule out is a viable suspect. Then perhaps turn your attention towards the FTP server on the far end. Don't always assume it's the F5 especially when you are not finding any forensic data to indicate one.

  • Hi Bhattman, you are probably right, all another services are working fine and actually I was wrong with configuration reload as it seems to be just syslog-ng what is reloaded and not a whole configuration as I firstly supposed.

I will ask customer to check FTP server, will see what they find as they convinced the fault is on LB side :)
